    About Lewis C. Brodsky
    Northern Virginia Area Chairman
Virginia Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

Lew Brodsky chairs an area committee of volunteers – businessmen, educators, and other retirees – who donate their time and energies to supporting America’s citizen- soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. His committee works to gain the support of public and private employers throughout Northern Virginia’s six counties and five independent cities by encouraging adoption of personnel policies favorable to employees serving in the National Guard and military Reserves. Such “ESGR” committees have been formed in Virginia and in all states and territories. They are sponsored by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs at the Department of Defense.

In May 2004, Mr. Brodsky retired from a long and distinguished career of Federal service. At the time, he was the Acting Director of the U.S. Selective Service System (SSS), serving at its National Headquarters in Arlington, Va. He was in charge of this independent Federal agency which is responsible for maintaining America’s readiness to conduct a fair and equitable military draft, and for registering all young men in the Nation as they reach age 18. Under his leadership, the SSS was staffed by hundreds of full-time and part-time employees and assisted by more than 10,000 volunteers throughout the U.S. Prior to being named Acting Director by the White House in January 2003, Mr. Brodsky served as the Agency’s Deputy Director and, from 1986 to 2002, as its Director of Public and Congressional Affairs. He was appointed to the Federal Government’s Senior Executive Service in November 1995.
