McLean CBC Study Limits
The McLean Community Business Center (CBC) covers approximately 230 acres, centered around the intersection of Chain Bridge Road and Old Dominion Drive. This area plays a key role in the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan, which identifies several transportation-related challenges and provides recommendations to improve the community. In 2018, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized a new review process to encourage revitalization and enhance the area's sense of place. This updated plan focuses on land use, density, transportation needs, urban design, and open space standards.
Working with a community task force, County staff developed a revised version of the McLean CBC Comprehensive Plan, which was approved by the Board of Supervisors on June 22, 2021. As part of this effort, the Board also authorized a pilot study to evaluate transportation options that will support these revitalization goals.
Scope of StudyThe McLean CBC Pilot Study aims to improve the area’s transportation network by creating a more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly environment, while also addressing vehicle speeds. Five key proposals will be studied as part of the pilot:
- On-street parking during off-peak periods
- Reducing turning radii and travel lane widths
- Converting existing two-way left-turn lanes into raised or landscaped medians
- Removing dedicated right-turn lanes
- Reducing the speed limit on Old Dominion Drive from Beverly Road to Corner Lane from 30 MPH to 25 MPH
These proposals will inform the development of preferred design concepts, which will be presented for public feedback. The concepts will be conceptual in nature, with preliminary engineering designs, cost estimates, and implementation strategies. These proposed changes will not involve major construction work such as relocating curbs.
Study CorridorsThe pilot study will focus on two key corridors in the heart of McLean CBC:
- Old Dominion Drive: from Beverly Road to Corner Lane
- Chain Bridge Road: from Old Chain Bridge Road to Tennyson Drive/Ingleside Avenue
Traffic analysis will also be conducted at six intersections to assess the impact of the proposed design concepts on the broader transportation network:
- Old Dominion Drive at Beverly Road
- Old Dominion Drive at Chain Bridge Road
- Chain Bridge Road at Old Chain Bridge Road
- Chain Bridge Road at Brawner Street
- Chain Bridge Road at Laughlin Avenue
- Chain Bridge Road at Tennyson Drive/Ingleside Avenue
